Diablo 2: Resurrected is a full reboot of the Blizzard's hack-and-slash RPG first released two decades ago. It promises updated graphics, 4K gaming, and all the content from Diablo II and it's expansions. 

However, Diablo 2: Resurrected is a remaster, not a remake — as head of Diablo, Rod Fergusson stressed at the initial announcement. Gameplay-wise, fans can look forward to 3D models and quality-of-life changes improving on the original experience. But if the nostalgia is too much to bear, a legacy toggle lets you switch from the new graphics to those of the original Diablo 2.

DiabloDiablo 2: Resurrected shocked me in the opening minutes of play. I wasn’t surprised because it looked so good; I was surprised because it looked exactly as I remembered it.

I’ve experienced this effect before, most recently when playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2. I didn’t think these games looked like murky, blocky messes when I originally played them, because they looked similar to every other game on the market at the time. Diablo 2: Resurrected also looks similar to other hack n’ slash games available today, so my 2021 brain just accepted things at face value. Yep, this is the game I loved back in the day. I have no idea why they’re expecting me to pay for it again.
